1991 BMW 318is — “Little Red Riding Hood”
Lightweight, agile, and highly sought after by BMW enthusiasts, the 1991 BMW 318is known as “Little Red Riding Hood” is about to undergo a transformation that will take this classic chassis far beyond its original intentions.
The 318is has long been appreciated for its lightweight construction and nimble handling, making it an ideal foundation for a performance-focused build. But rather than simply preserving what came from the factory, this project is being completely reimagined from the ground up.
At the center of the transformation will be a K24 engine transplant, paired with a turbocharger to bring forced induction into the equation. Engine management will be handled by Haltech, providing the control necessary to make the new powerplant perform reliably while leaving plenty of room for future tuning and development.
The transformation won’t stop under the hood. The interior is also receiving a comprehensive makeover, beginning with NRG fixed carbon seats to provide a lightweight, supportive foundation for the driver. An electric power steering column will modernize the steering system while helping simplify the engine bay and improve the overall driving experience.
The factory dashboard will also receive some much-needed attention. After years of use and the inevitable cracking that comes with age, the dash will be completely reworked and restored, bringing a cleaner, more finished appearance to the cockpit while retaining the character of the original E30 interior.

For now, Little Red Riding Hood remains very much a work in progress. With a K24 turbo powerplant, modern engine management, a reworked cockpit, and plenty more development still ahead, this 318is is only at the beginning of its story.
There is a long road ahead before Little Red Riding Hood is ready to hit the pavement—but the transformation has officially begun. Stay tuned to see what’s in store.
